… The Tough Gets Going …

Saturday, March 31st, 2007

One of my high school teachers once told our class: “When the going gets tough, the tough gets going.” I never understood what she said (and seriously thought she mis-quoted the quote, but I think I can understand it a little better now (after the traditional googling, of course…).

The first part, “When the going gets tough…”, is simply explainable as encountering a challenge, etc. However, the second part, “… The tough gets going.” never ‘gelled’ with my consciousness. After said googling, I found this interesting:

“It means … brave, bold, determined . . . rugged, strong, indomitable. The saying goes ‘. . . the tough GET going’: ‘tough’ functions as a plural noun here. Those who are tough (strong) get going: they spring into action to meet whatever challenge is making things tough (difficult).”

Interesting… very interesting…

I thought it was snowing, not raining…

Friday, March 16th, 2007

One thing I’ve had a hard time getting used to in New York is people using umbrellas during snow storms.

Today it started sleeting early in the morning, and sleeted, and sleeted, and sleeted all day long and is continuing to do so as I write this. (we have about 2-3 inches of sleet outside of my apartment right now…)

One thing that I noticed today (and something I always notice) is the way people use umbrellas to protect themselves from snow.

Let’s forget for a moment, that it was sleeting and not actually snowing (but they still use them when it is truly snowing). When I lived in the Midwest a peep’s weather protection broke down as follows:

Rain – Umbrellas
Snow – Winter jacket, gloves, scarf, thick hat, etc, etc.

I can’t remember a single time that I saw somebody use an umbrella to protect themselves from snow/sleet in Indiana. (Maybe it’s because people really don’t walk in Indiana – hmmm…)

Don’t get me wrong, using an umbrella sometimes makes sense during a snowstorm, especially when sleeting… I’m just an old-fashioned, Midwestern boy who accepts the fact that winter time is a cold, messy time, and “you just gotta put on a hat and go walkin’“.

Plus, I really do like the snow when it’s falling…

How will you celebrate St Paddy’s Day?

Monday, March 12th, 2007

Our previous St. Patrick’s Day post has inspired me to become more interested in the St. Patrick’s Day holiday.

This Saturday I will be attending a coffee house at a friend’s house in Jersey and I need your help:

How can you make coffee green?
– Yes, that’s right I want to know how to make green coffee.

Can any of you help me? Post your suggestions in the comments.

Also, tell us how you plan on showing you Irish heritage to celebrate the St. Patrick’s Day holiday (besides the typical bar hopping of course…).

Oh the irony…

Happy Daylight Savings Time!!! (Three weeks early, thanks to a 2005 injunction by the United States, closely followed by the unofficial 51st – 60th states.

Yesterday, the first day of Daylight Savings Time, I woke up for my Sunday morning ritual and as I left – I couldn’t find my watch, it wasn’t in any of the obvious spots (nightstand, coffee table, microwave, kitchen counter, bookshelf), so I just gave up on it for the time being. When I got home I searched everywhere – I think I even opened the oven and the refrigerator just to make sure I didn’t put it one of those ‘obvious’ places everyone should first check. I finally gave up and resigned to the fact that I would have to buy a new watch.

After six years with the watch, I realized that we were going to have part ways.

But wait – As I began to make my bed for the evening – I found the watch! After a day without it, my watch and I were reunited.

Oh the irony of losing my watch on Daylight Savings Time!

(Sorry for the classic and cliche Irish puns…)

Thanks to B. for the heads-up on this one.

Fly JetBlue

Saturday, March 3rd, 2007

So I just got back from a ‘sunny’ trip to Florida and would like to share some thoughts about my recent trip on the airline. I’ve never been a big fan of airlines, especially when it comes to the customer service that most airlines provide. However when I flew JetBlue this past weekend, it was absolutely wonderful. By far, they provide the best customer service by any airline out there.

  • 36 channels of DirecTV on both flights… (They’ll even provide free headphones if you don’t have them.
  • A full can of Soda during the in-flight ‘snack time’.
  • A small bag of peanuts – that’s for the weaklings… I can choose between 4-5 different snack offerings… Doritos, yummmm.
  • Plus, they do hold true to their Customer Bill of Rights.

Yeah, they’ve had their fair share of troubles but which airline doesn’t from time to time? I personally believe that it’s how the airline treats it’s customers in the end – and in that area Jet Blue gets a solid ‘B’. There’s room for improvement, but it’s better than the other airlines and their penny-pinching ‘half-can of soda and stale pretzel tricks’.
